چکیده

Backgroud During 1980-1983 I was a scientist and General Secretary in the Nordic Council of Arctic Medical Research (NCAMR). This organization belonged to the Nordic Council of Ministers, and its office was situated at the University of Oulu, Finland. One of the purposes of NCARM was to promote scientific research related to adaptation of circumpolar people to their environment. My research interest was partly directed to mechanisms by which environmental stimuli are translated to hormonal responses and, therefore focused on brain, hypothalamic and pituitary hormones. At NCAMR I decided to initiate studies on the effects of luminosity on bodily functions. An important subject for such studies is the pineal hormone melatonin that is rigidly controlled by the amount of light reaching the eyes.

Association of Melatonin Receptor 1A Gene Polymorphisms with Production and Reproduction Traits in Zandi Sheep

Melatonin regulates some major physiological processes such as maturation and function of reproductive system, pubertal development, seasonal reproduction and adaptation. The activation of melatonin hormone is mediated by melatonin receptor. Previous studies showed melatonin receptor 1A gene (MTNR1A) is highly polymorphic in seasonally breeding species. The aim of the present study was detectio...

Melatonin and the pineal gland: influence on mammalian seasonal and circadian physiology.

The pineal hormone melatonin is secreted with a marked circadian rhythm. Normally, maximum production occurs during the dark phase of the day and the duration of secretion reflects the duration of the night. The changing profile of secretion as a function of daylength conveys photoperiodic information for the organization of seasonal rhythms in mammals. The role of melatonin in mammalian circad...

Investigating the effect of night shifts rotation speed on the pattern of melatonin secretion and sleepiness among petrochemical control room operators

Introduction: This paper aims to explore the main effect of night shift rotation speed on the pattern of melatonin secretion and the sleepiness, among control room operators (CORs) in a petrochemical industry Material and method: In this study, 60 CORs operators within two different patterns, including 7 nights and 3 nights shift works were selected from a petrochemical industry to investigate...

Seasonal Reproduction in Vertebrates: Melatonin Synthesis, Binding, and Functionality Using Tinbergen's Four Questions.

One of the many functions of melatonin in vertebrates is seasonal reproductive timing. Longer nights in winter correspond to an extended duration of melatonin secretion. The purpose of this review is to discuss melatonin synthesis, receptor subtypes, and function in the context of seasonality across vertebrates. We conclude with Tinbergen's Four Questions to create a comparative framework for f...
